Yachting Address Review — Cranchi M44 HT: the Lombard sport-cruiser that now plays with the best

The Cranchi M44 HT marks a turning point in the history of the Pianello del Lario yard. After decades of building serious but understated boats — the Zaffiro, Endurance, Evoluzione ranges — Cranchi decided in the 2010s to reposition its range upmarket, radically modernise its lines and enter direct competition with Prestige, Galeon and Fairline in the premium 12-metre sport-cruiser segment. The M44 HT is the result of that strategic pivot — and it is convincing.

In production since 2013 and still in the current catalogue, the Cranchi M44 HT is a 12.01-metre hull hard-top sport-cruiser whose second-hand market now spans a decade of production. Its second-hand prices range from approximately €260,000 for the earliest model years to over €500,000 for the most recent, best-equipped versions — positioning that clearly signals this boat is no longer in the same category as the Endurance 41.

What the "M" means in Cranchi's current nomenclature

Cranchi profoundly restructured its range through the 2010s, progressively abandoning the older model names (Zaffiro, Endurance, Evoluzione) for a more contemporary nomenclature.

The prefix "M" designates the "Mediteranée" range — Cranchi's line of modern sport-cruisers and cabin-cruisers, developed with contemporary design, latest-generation IPS powertrains and interior finishes that compete with premium Italian and British production. It is Cranchi's flagship line in intermediate sizes.

Alongside the M44, Cranchi produces other "M" models of different sizes — M29 HT, M38 HT, M50 HT and M65 on larger versions. This coherent range extends to 20-metre superyachts, which gives the M44 HT a clear position: the premium mid-range of Cranchi's current offering.

The "HT": what the hard-top concretely delivers

The "HT" suffix (Hard Top) is the M44's central architectural feature — and it deserves explanation to understand what distinguishes this model from an open M44.

The hard-top is a rigid roof integrated into the boat's structure above the cockpit and helm station. Unlike a soft bimini, it is part of the permanent boat architecture — it protects the helm position and cockpit area from weather, direct sun and spray without seasonal assembly or dismantling. On Cranchi versions, this hard-top is typically equipped with opening or sliding panels that allow Mediterranean air to flow through in fine weather while retaining protection in difficult conditions.

The hard-top trade-off is a slightly higher centre of gravity than an open version and a more imposing visual profile — the M44 HT is recognisable by its compact, structured silhouette, very different from the sporting profile of earlier Cranchi models. It is an architectural choice that suits a clientele who navigate year-round, including in the Mediterranean inter-season.

Two generations to understand on the second-hand market

The M44 HT has been in production since 2013, and a decade of production in a premium segment naturally produces evolutions that need to be distinguished to read the second-hand market intelligently.

Early generations (2013-2016) correspond to the model's introduction. These examples are 9 to 12 years old and incorporate the powertrain technologies of the early 2010s. Their second-hand prices are significantly lower than recent versions and represent the most accessible entry into this model.

Intermediate generations (2017-2020) benefit from progressive improvements in interior design and onboard systems. These examples are at natural resale age — first owners ceding them after 5-8 years — and constitute the active core of the M44 HT second-hand market.

Recent versions (2021-2024) are near-new on the second-hand market. Their prices reflect proximity to new and the latest model evolutions — improved interior finishes, integrated latest-generation electronics, IPS powertrain in its most current configurations.

Volvo IPS propulsion: the central technical differentiator

The Cranchi M44 HT in its contemporary versions (from approximately 2016-2017) is typically powered by twin Volvo IPS — typical configurations range from 2 × 380 hp (IPS 600) to 2 × 435 hp (IPS 700) depending on options and year.

This inverted pod propulsion system with manoeuvring joystick fundamentally changes the M44 HT's harbour handling experience. A 12-metre boat that berths as easily as an 8-metre boat thanks to the joystick — this is the argument that every M44 HT IPS owner cites spontaneously. In the marinas of the Côte d'Azur and Monaco where berths are tight and traffic intense, this manoeuvrability has concrete value.

Older examples (2013-2016) may be equipped with shaft-drive diesel — a simpler architecture but without a joystick, requiring more manoeuvring experience. This powertrain difference is one of the most important to identify before any viewing: it changes both the service profile and the daily use experience.

What the second-hand market reveals about the M44 HT's value

The Cranchi M44 HT second-hand market now spans ten years of production, allowing for the first time in this model's history a depreciation curve to be traced.

Available observations show moderate depreciation over the first years — well-equipped 2019-2021 examples still negotiate at prices representing 60 to 75% of the period new price. This resale value is superior to French mass-production equivalents but slightly below that of Pardo models benefiting from even more marked production scarcity.

Cranchi M44 HT against real competitors

Cranchi's premium repositioning with the M44 HT has placed it in direct competition with brands that benefit from more established recognition in France and Northern Europe.

Against the Prestige 520 S or 500 HT, the M44 HT is slightly shorter but offers comparable interior finishes and equivalent IPS manoeuvrability. Prestige has the advantage of a denser dealer network in France — but the Cranchi is often better valued in Italian and Adriatic Mediterranean markets.

Against the Galeon 450 HTS, the M44 HT is comparable in size and hard-top concept. Galeon typically offers more interior volume; Cranchi offers more refined finishes and a more distinctive design identity.

Against the Fairline Targa 47, the M44 HT is slightly smaller but more contemporary in its lines. Fairline has the advantage of a long British marine tradition; Cranchi has the advantage of stronger Mediterranean presence and more accessible service in Italian ports.

What to check when buying second-hand

IPS propulsion (on 2016+ versions): Volvo pods require specialist servicing by Volvo-certified technicians. Demand complete IPS service records with invoices — joint membranes, pivot bearings and electric steering controls follow their own service intervals separate from standard engine servicing.

Shaft-drive powertrain (on 2013-2016 versions): stern glands, Cutless bearings and propeller shafts to inspect during haul-out. On a 9 to 12-year-old boat, a comprehensive review of these components should be budgeted if not documented.

Hard-top and opening panels: opening mechanisms (electric or manual depending on version) deserve full testing during the viewing — sealing joints, motorised reducers, sliding rails. A hard-top that leaks or whose panels jam is a visible and expensive defect to correct.

Premium interior finishes: leather, woodwork, specific floor coverings in high-spec Cranchi versions. On regularly-used or charter examples, these materials show their age — assess their condition before committing on price.

Electronics: 2013-2017 examples may have partially obsolete electronics — chartplotter, autopilot, audio system. Update budget €6,000 to €15,000 depending on target level and existing condition.

Our verdict

The Cranchi M44 HT is proof that the Pianello del Lario yard has succeeded in its premium repositioning. This is no longer the same register as the Zaffiro 34 or Endurance 41 — it is a contemporary sport-cruiser that seriously competes with Prestige, Galeon and Fairline in its price segment, with in addition the Italian build quality that has characterised Cranchi for 150 years. Its main weakness on the French market is still-limited awareness compared to French brands — which produces second-hand prices slightly below those of an equivalent Prestige, and therefore a real opportunity for buyers who have taken the time to compare honestly.
