Pen Doar, originally named Buyuk Amiral, was designed in 1988 by its commissioner to navigate towards the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. This boat is comfortable and handles the high seas and 50-knot winds very well. We have had the opportunity to verify this on five occasions. From 2018 to 2023, we undertook a complete refit to make it autonomous and capable of transoceanic voyages.
Modifications and Improvements
• Hull: The hull planking was replaced with Tali wood from Guinea-Bissau, a fire-resistant, rot-proof, extremely hard wood of 6 cm thickness, with very corrosive essential oil.
• Keel: The keel, extended from 2.20 m to 2.70 m, was reinforced with a sister keel and 13 stainless steel bars of 26 mm, with a total weight of 9.5 tons.
• Bulwark: A 6 cm thick and 25 cm wide Tali bulwark was installed to crown the entire hull.
• Deckhouse and Wheelhouse: The sides of the deckhouse and the wheelhouse were redone with a 10 mm veneer of Guatambu from South America. The wheelhouse was reconstructed with anti-break-in double glazing.
• Deck and Cockpit: The deck, roof, side decks, and cockpit were covered with comfortable and insulating Seacork.
• Portholes and Hatches: The 18 sliding aluminum portholes with 6 mm glass and the 2 hatches are new.
• Stainless Steel: All stainless steel parts, including bollards, cross-trees, fairleads, chocks, tilting scuppers, swivel anchors, railings, chainplates, and handrails, were custom-made.
• Masts: The 2 steel masts were renovated and refixed on a step for the main mast and a support structure for the mizzen mast.
• Engine and Generator: The engine was refurbished, and the generator is new. All tanks (freshwater, diesel, greywater, blackwater, and hydraulic) are also new.
• Electrical Equipment: The 8 solar panels of 345Wc in 24V, controllers, cabinets, Victron isolation transformer, batteries, 12V and 24V chargers, electric winches, 24V pumps, all electronics, radar, WiFi and TNT antennas, including the GMDSS, are all new.
• Comfort: The watermaker, 2 refrigerators, freezer, 4-function oven, gas stove, dishwasher, washing machine, and air compressor are new. The 3 electric toilets are new. The kitchen layout was designed for navigation.

Pen Doar accommodates 10 people on a cruise with 3 double en-suite cabins for 6 people and 4 additional berths.
A spacious cockpit with a U-shaped seating area and a steering column is centered around a double door that leads to a 360° glass-enclosed wheelhouse with anti-breakage glass (4+1+4/8/3+1+3).
On the port side, there is the pilotage area with a door for direct access to the deck, and on the starboard side, a dining table.
A staircase leads to a lounge area with a home cinema TV, a small washbasin adjacent to it providing access to the machinery, and on the port side, a fully equipped kitchen.
From the lounge, a small corridor has a hatch that can serve as an emergency exit.
A laundry workshop in the forward compartment (with a berth), which also serves as a sail locker, communicates with the deck and serves as an emergency exit. In the aft, there are 2 technical rooms and the machinery.
