Description

“Patchwork”, a Gran Schpountz topsail schooner, built in 1982 according to the plans of Daniel Bombigher, has traveled around the world (more than 15,000 miles traveled in the Atlantic and the Pacific over the last 7 years). It is a single-owner boat, maintained by its owner and flying the French flag.
Built in molded wood on glued laminated frames, made entirely of Iroko wood, masts and spars in Oregon pine.
Currently, tours can be organized in São Paulo. Transport to Barcelona is planned for September 2023.
Patchwork was built in the 1970s in a former school in the Vosges, in the north-east of France. Its first launch took place in a river, and its maiden voyage was through France by canals and the Rhône, until it reached the Mediterranean. In 1982, construction was completed with the masts and all the rigging.
The port captain of Gruissan invited Patchwork to become the flagship of all local regattas. She remained in this port until 2015. The owners lived on board and sailed to Corsica, Spain and the Balearic Islands during the summer. They raised their son on board.
The son, Thomas, took over the boat when his parents moved into a house. With his wife, they carried out a complete refit between 2011 and 2015 and set sail in November 2015 to sail around the world. Passing through the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, the Caribbean, then the Panama Canal, they went to French Polynesia, then crossed the Pacific to Chile.
Patchwork is a very comfortable boat, both at anchor and under sail. Designed by Daniel Z Bombigher, a famous French architect from the 70s, its classic look was inspired by the 19th century American schooner while the construction and features of the bridge were modernized using the best techniques. The 'Gran Schpountz' is a romantic schooner with a solid construction (strip planks and laminated frames) and the interior is meticulously finished. Square sails are perfect for downwind sailing, and it can reach up to 8 knots upwind. The genoa was installed to facilitate maneuvering, as the owners were sailing in just two pairs. They kept the front sails in case you prefer the 100% classic look.
